Hooi Yen is a corporate and commercial lawyer with in-house and law firm experience, enabling her to provide practical legal advice meeting clients’ business objectives.  

Hooi Yen practiced with one of Singapore’s largest law firms after graduating from the National University of Singapore.  There, she advised many e-commerce and technology companies.  She particularly enjoyed working on the sale and purchase of businesses, venture capital and private equity placements, shareholders’ agreements, employment law and employee share incentive schemes.

In 2001, she joined the management team of ZUJI, a start-up that grew into an Asia Pacific wide MNC within 5 years. Hooi Yen was its Head, Legal & Compliance, leading the corporate expansion of the Company.

Hooi Yen heads the Corporate and Commercial Department of Gateway Law Corporation. Her practice focuses on (a) venture capital, investments and mergers and acquisitions, (b) technology, info-communications and e-commerce, (c) the travel and hospitality industry and (d) intellectual property, media and the arts. She is a company secretary for several companies, including one listed on the Singapore Exchange.

She is cited as a leading lawyer under the Corporate/M&A category of the 2007-2008 edition of the AsiaPacific Legal 500. Her work is also cited in Asialaw Profiles 2008 in 3 categories-labour & employment, M&A and private equity & venture capital.

Hooi Yen regularly speaks at seminars to share her experience on corporate and commercial law, and to judge business plan competitions to tap on her experience in venture capital, investments and mergers and acquisitions. She has judged the INSEAD Business Venture Competition, NUS’ Start up @ Singapore and business plan classes by MBA and undergraduate business students at NUS.

She is a member of the International Bar Association. She sits on the International Relations Committee of the Law Society and is a mentor with the United Nations’ Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)’s Hiroshima Fellowship for Afghanistan 2007 and 2008.
